Crisis Responsive Peer Training
This baseline training is designed for peer support professionals who may encounter crisis situations in their roles. It provides essential knowledge and foundational skills to help peers recognize and respond appropriately to crises while staying within their scope of practice. It is important to note that this training does not prepare peers to serve as crisis team members. Peers interested in working on crisis teams will require additional, in-depth training from their employer or other specialized programs to develop the necessary skills for that level of intervention. – This a Collaborative Training by the Missouri Department of Mental Health and the Missouri Credentialing Board.
This training program will provide information and skills building in the following areas (and more!): situational awareness, trauma, self-care, conflict de-escalation, suicide prevention and post crisis strategies. As with other peer training programs, once completed an exam must be taken and passed in order to receive the Crisis Responsive Peer Certification.
**You MUST currently have a Certified Peer Specialist or a Family Support Provider certification with the Missouri Credentialing Board
The Crisis Responsive Peer training program will meet ALL renewal requirements for a CPS or FSP for your next renewal! It is worth 20 training hours, and 6 of the 20 hours count as ethics training.
In order to receive contact hours (i.e., certificate) for the Crisis Responsive Peer Training, you must pass the Crisis Responsive Peer exam and complete the entire process for receiving a CRP credential.

NEW: Recovery & Public Safety Certification
Introductory Overview
The Recovery & Public Safety Certification reflects our commitment to advancing a workforce that is well-prepared to meet the complex needs of individuals, families, and communities at the intersection of recovery, harm reduction, and public health.
This certification evolves from the former Harm Reduction Specialist Certification, building on that strong foundation while expanding into a broader, more robust curriculum. It is grounded in federal direction and best practices, including the Executive Order on Harm Reduction and Overdose Prevention, the SAMHSA Harm Reduction Framework, and current national standards in behavioral health and public safety.
This comprehensive training is designed to:
- Address recovery, prevention, harm reduction, and public health integration.
- Align with national best practices and policy guidance to strengthen workforce readiness.
- Equip professionals with the tools needed to balance recovery support, harm reduction strategies, and public health and safety priorities.
While harm reduction remains a vital cornerstone, the Recovery & Public Safety Certification expands beyond this foundation to provide:
- Greater depth in content, preparing participants to respond to diverse and evolving challenges.
- Expanded cross-system applications, integrating perspectives from healthcare, behavioral health, criminal justice, and community-based settings.
- Practical strategies for building healthier, safer, and more resilient communities.
This certification represents a major step forward in strengthening the workforce that supports individuals impacted by substance use, mental health challenges, and justice involvement. Participants will leave prepared to foster collaboration, promote wellness, and lead efforts that protect both individual dignity and community safety.

Family Support Provider (FSP) Training
A family support provider provides supports and services that increase protective factors. They oftentimes connect with the family member in a way that ignites the spark of hope that things can and will get better because they have experienced a similar journey.
Risk factors
- Emotional/Mental Health issues
- Problems following rules and obeying the law
- Impulsivity
- Poor communication and lack of problem solving skills
- Basic needs not being met
- Not safe at home, school and in the community
The family support provider is primarily providing supports and services to the child or youth and family to help reduce risk factors. They help the child or youth to identify their needs and barriers to being more successful. They develop goals, identify strengths, and provide support for them to learn and practice new skills. They also work with the child or youth and family to increase their ability to communicate more effectively and learn how to solve problems when needed.
