Peer Support Specialist

Salary: $13.00-$15.00 / hour

Job Description:

The Peer Support Specialist works side-by-side with participants to assist them in navigating their daily schedules, ensuring they are in classes on time and as scheduled. The Peer Support Specialist utilizes their lived experience to engage participants in healthy communication, while ensuring positive, active participation at the Academy.

This position reports to the EVP, Head of Community and Life Skills

Major Duties

– Able to engage participants in their motivation for change.
– Able to be direct with participants while being engaging and kind.
– Active engagement in own recovery with a commitment to recovery
– Demonstrate empathy, care, or concern to strengthen a participant’s confidence
– Facilitate and lead individual and group sessions
– Provide individual coaching and encouragement to participants, assisting them in discovering and reaching their life goals
– Serve as a resource to participants to find community supports and how to utilize these in their recovery process
– Open to learning new approaches and willing to take on new tasks
– Maintain positive and professional relationships with Academy participants, prison staff and administration, team members, volunteers, community partners and adhere to Academy policies.
– Collaborate with team members to ensure Concordance Academy continues to be the best.


Requirements: Required Education and Experience

– High School diploma or equivalent
– Lived experience with at least five (5) years of continuous sobriety
– One year of experience working in substance use treatment.
– Experience with the 12 Steps
– Experience working with justice-involved adults or other vulnerable populations
– Experience as a peer support specialist.

Licensure and Certification

– Class E Driver’s License
– Certified Peer Specialist (preferred)
– Preferred Education and Experience
– Experience working with justice-involved adults or other vulnerable populations

Live Trainings:  With careful consideration, it has been determined it is best to cancel all upcoming MCB March and April trainings.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recommending social distancing when possible due to the COVID-19 virus.

Spring Renewals:  If you are renewing in April 2020 you will no longer be required to complete all your required educational hours; however, you will still need to provide a copy of your required ethics hours.  (You will however be allowed to do online ethics).

These changes are only in effect for this Spring April 2020 Renewal Date. For all future renewal dates including October 2020 you will be required to complete all required educational hours and “live” ethics trainings.
