LGBQTA
Presented by: Darla Belflower
Description: Substance use is a complex issue that affects individuals from all walks of life, including the LGBTQ community. Unfortunately, members of this community often face unique challenges when it comes to seeking help for addiction. Stigma, shame, and a lack of family support can all make it difficult for LGBTQ individuals to access the resources they need to overcome substance use disorders. Additionally, growing anti-LBGTQ legislation can further exacerbate these issues, creating a hostile environment for individuals who are struggling with addiction.
As a service provider, it is important to approach these issues with sensitivity and compassion. Ethical considerations must be taken into account when providing services to LBGTQ individuals, and it is critical to create an organization that is welcoming and accepting. This means actively working to reduce stigma and creating a safe and supportive environment for those who are seeking help.
Recovery is a key component of addiction treatment, and it is important to understand how it fits into the LGBTQ community. While abstinence-based recovery programs may work for some individuals, harm-reduction strategies may be more appropriate for others. SAMSHA defines recovery as: “A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” By tailoring treatment to the needs of LBGTQ individuals, we can ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need to achieve lasting recovery.

Beyond the Surface: Exploring Stigma
Presented by: Tim Cesario
Description: "This hour-long training will define stigma and examine how it profoundly impacts individuals with addiction, both in active use and in recovery. The discussion will explore the concept of humans as social beings with a deep need to belong, and how this fundamental aspect of our nature is challenged by stigma, often leading to feelings of isolation and shame. We will also address how stigma creates barriers to seeking help, engaging in recovery, and reintegrating into society.
The session will further explore the different types of stigma—public, self, and institutional—and how each affects those with substance use disorders. Participants will gain insight into the harmful effects stigma can have on an individual’s mental health, treatment outcomes, and overall well-being. Finally, the training will offer strategies for reducing stigma, fostering empathy, and creating more supportive environments for those seeking services."

Introduction to Overcome, Part 1 (counts as 3 hours of Ethics training)
Presented by: Michelle Bowles, CPS
Note: It is encouraged that peers take Part 1 and Part 2 of this series (February and March), however, it is not a requirement
Description: Self-care, and self-regulation are foundational to the ethical commitment of working as a Peer Specialist. This introduction to research based approaches provides opportunities for self-exploration and tools for self-regulation to quickly shift the nervous system as we manage life challenges, while neuro-physiologic re-programming changes ingrained patterns that can positively impact all areas of one's recovery path/day-to-day life.
This is not group therapy, but opportunities for self-awareness. The goal is adding tools to the recovery toolbox, and beginning to have context and broader language for our own individual responses to our own "what happened" inputs. Session includes handouts, journalling prompts, video and audio recordings for ongoing practice. This training will count as 3 Ethics hours.

Introduction to Overcome, Part 2 (counts as 3 hours of Ethics training)
Presented by: Michelle Bowles, CPS
Note: It is encouraged that peers take Part 1 and Part 2 of this series (February and March), however, it is not a requirement
Description: Building on the Introduction to Overcome part one, this session dives deeper into the neuro-physiologic programming errors that get locked into our mind-body systems. Instead of programming errors continuing to elicit a stress response in the body-mind complex, we learn how we can notice and shift that programming to mindfully alter those responses. While part one is more of the "how to," part two includes more of the "why" along with additional tools of "how." Session includes journalling prompts, video and audio recordings for ongoing practice.

Engaging Youth and Young Adults
Presented by: JJ Gossrau, Rachel Kryah, Rebecca Preston, Jodi Woodruff, Brooke Holterman, Grace Chapel
Description: Description: This three-hour virtual training is designed to promote the education and inclusion of peer supports throughout mental health care and community systems. The webinar will focus on how to better engage with youth, young adults, their families, and supports. Attendees will gain a foundation of the roles of a peer and understand how peer roles are different from other traditional support methods. Attendees will be introduced to LifeLaunch, a resource developed to help youth and young adults navigate the transition to adulthood, the importance of lived experience in early psychosis care, and why some young people are more vulnerable to the effects of substance use and mental illness than others. In an effort to transcend institutions and systems, this workshop, delivered by members of Missouri’s Early Psychosis Care Center team is open to all peer supporters, not just those with the title “peer specialist.” This training will count as 3 CEU hours.

Co-Occurring Disorders: What You Need to Know
Presented by: Darla Belflower, LCSW, CPS
Description: There is a strong correlation between behavioral health diagnosis and substance use disorder. Co-occurring disorders were once thought to be a rare event, but it really seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Unfortunately, individuals with co-occurring disorders face numerous challenges, such as an increase in the severity of symptoms, lower treatment adherence rates, higher dropout rates, an increased risk of suicide, and a greater chance of relapse. To help providers better understand this population, this workshop will provide education on the
prevalence of co-occurring disorders, assessment tools, engagement strategies with specialized populations, and treatment interventions. This training will count as 3 CEU hours.
